Search Engine Rankings - What Should You Do To Improve Rankings?
Aug 20 2008, 2:51 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 20 2008, 2:51 PM EDT
How to create your business online as a success is all about leveraging the search engines. Google, MSN, Yahoo! are the three largest and should be your main focus. While your website is for users such as yourself, you also want to create the web pages for the search engines. There is a unique balance that gets played when developing web pages for better search engine rankings. The balance is making sure it is easily navigable for humans as well as search engine spiders.

A good point is always having a easy navigation bar either on the top left or right of your website that is consistent. Another good tip is having a heading for those navigation bars and making sure that seven links are not below or above those navigation headings. For example, the heading should be bolded and then have no more than seven links below or above.

If there's too much information for the human eye, they will get distracted and leave the site. Make your navigation bars very simple for users. The faster they can see information in their view, the faster they will click and get to a deeper part of your web page. Search engine optimization includes all of the following. It includes key word research to find out what your customers are looking for and how they say the words about the products or services that you are selling.

It also includes on-site optimization. This is basically organizing your website so it is friendly and also user-friendly for Google as well as humans.

The last part is reports. Reports are effective ways to see what is going on with the website and make the needed changes.

And the most important part for search engine ranking is really the off-site or link building campaign.

So you are interested in trying to improve your search rankings? Critique this post if you like, these are my thoughts. See below

Pick Strategic Keywords
People browsing the internet often times search for Websites by typing keywords into the search engines. These words that you think your users are using to find your web site isn't always accurate, or else is only a small listing of the actual terms being searched for. We recommend that your strategic keywords should always be at least two or more words long. Often times too many sites will be relevant for a single word, and we like to have a guarantee that we will succeed for you.

Position Your Keywords
Make sure your strategic keywords appear in the major or important areas on your web pages. The title of the web page is extremely important. If you do not put your most strategic keywords in the page title, you may have a great site, however it will rank poorly. Use strategic keywords your title, your major descriptions and page titles. We also recommend that they appear in the first paragraphs of your web site. We don't recommend you over do it, usually you want to have a major keyword appear in your pages content about 6 times. (more or less depending on how much text is on the page)

Take web design in to consideration when trying to improve your search engine rankings!
Many webmasters will design web sites using many tables and scripts. Using tables i your web site, the search engine may read your website inefficiently and put more relevant text lower down on the web page. This is because a search engine will separate text from a table and often times move it down the page.

1. Create a website with valuable content. Put yourself in your reader's shoes. Do they want to visit a website with lousy content? The content on your website should solve an immediate problem for them, so that they will be willing to stay on your website and read more. With valuable content, your website will be search-engine friendly, which is essential if you want it to rank well. Keywords that you intend to optimize should also be placed within your content. Avoid repeating the keywords too many times, as search engines will view this as a spam and blacklist your site. Hire a professional SEO copywriter to write good content, with keywords nicely blended within the content.

2. Choose the right keyword phrase to attract your target customers. Strategically choosing of your keywords that target your customer is essential for your online success. The last thing you will ever want is to be able to drive visitors to your website, but the services or products that you provide are not what they are looking for. Research and use keywords that are closely related to what you are offering. Place them in the right fields within your web page, such as: Title tag, Meta tags, Header tags, Alt tags, and within the first 25 words in your page content.

3. Keep your website design and architecture simple. There are many benefits in keeping things simple. Firstly, visitors to your website can navigate easily between pages, finding what they want and buy products and services. Secondly, with simple architecture and design, search engines spider crawlers will be able to index your site more easily and thus be able to consider your site for higher ranking.

4. SEO techniques: White Hat preferable to Black Hat
Sep 3 2008, 1:56 PM EDT | Post edited: Sep 3 2008, 1:56 PM EDT
It has been the general practice to categorize SEO techniques into two different types - techniques that search engines find to be of good design and techniques that search engines consider not appropriate as they indulge in what is called spamming. Industry analysts label these methods and their practitioners as either white hat SEO, or black hat SEO. White hats produce healthy long lasting results whereas black hats jittery that their sites may be banned once the search engines detect what they are up to.

White hat techniques are those that adhere to the search engine guidelines and do not attempt to cheat. Despite the fact the search engine guidelines are a set of unwritten rules white hat takes no advantage. White hat primarily lays emphasis in creating content for users and not to exploit search engines. White Hat practitioners are ethical and practice values and rely more on the quality of content and marketing skills to achieve top ranking. White Hats realize that good search engine rankings takes time and avoid shortcut methods. White Hats have their rewards as they are able to get more inbound links from other websites, because their content is widely appreciated as valuable.

On the other hand, black hat unscrupulously uses ways and means not authorized by search engines to improve rankings. Black Hat SEO, more simply called as SEO spamming, is creating websites that have little or no worth, to trick the [search engines] into offering irrelevant or low-quality search results. Black Hat SEO can be likened to fly-by-night operators who are bent on getting instant results. The method they use to optimize their websites will no doubt get the website to the top of the search engines very rapidly, but when the search engines detects the foul methods, the website will crash or even get banned.
